THE ACADEMIC CENTER

What is the Bluegrass United Academic Center?

The Bluegrass United Academic Center (BUAC) offers core and elective classes to home-schooled high school students who are at least 14 years of age by Oct. 1, 2009.   It is just one of the programs offered by Bluegrass United (BU).  For more information regarding other BU programs, go to www.bluegrassunitedonline.com.  There are many students who participate in BU activities who do not attend BUAC. Activities and programs supported by BU are not duplicated at BUAC. Therefore, BUAC does not have its own fellowships, sports, graduation, trips or formal. To do so would divide the home school community. Instead, BUAC students are encouraged to participate in BU activities and programs.

The Bluegrass United Academic Center is designed to give home schooling parents assistance with electives and core classes in the high school years.  It is an entity that solely locates and secures independently contracted instructors to meet with home-schooled students in classes for one to two and a half hours a week.  Elective classes run for 32 weeks, and core classes run for 34 weeks.  Core classes meet at Broadway Baptist Church, and elective classes meet at Ashland Avenue Baptist Church.

HOW DOES THE ACADEMIC CENTER WORK?

How the Center Works

It is imperative that every family understands how the academic center is structured and functions.  It is a collaborative effort among Bluegrass United, instructors, parents and youth.  It is not a school, but a place in which instructors can join with parents for the purpose of educating their youth.  BUAC provides a meeting place, finds the instructors, and provides a light framework in which the center can function; the remaining responsibilities are held by the parents.

Parents choose the classes, pay the instructor, and hold their children accountable for their role in the learning process. Parents must also assist in the administration of the center on a limited, volunteer basis.  Although BUAC provides course descriptions and instructor biographical information for each class, it is parents who must make the decision as to whether the class and instructor are appropriate for their child. This design is intended to respect the parents' role as the primary educator of their children. BUAC simply seeks to promote home education by assisting parents in finding instructors and providing a place where they can meet.

Bluegrass United desires to make excellence a hallmark of the academic center.  For this reason, BUAC seeks qualified instructors who support home education, embrace the Christian faith, and uphold BUAC's core principles.

The Academic Center has been developed to provide assistance to the self-disciplined, home-schooled teen.  Students must be prepared, attentive, and free from distraction to benefit from this educational model.  Because the core classes are concentrated and require considerable student preparation outside of class, students who lack self-discipline will find success difficult and are advised to seek other educational models.

WHO ARE WE?

Who We Are At The Bluegrass United Academic Center

We are Christian parents, educators, and volunteers who are dedicated to educating and preparing our youth to be Christ-centered adults.  A Steering Committee, made up of volunteer home-schooling parents, oversees the functioning of the Academic Center.
